Yasmien Kurdi
Whatever Yasmien Kurdi endeavors in, she does it in impressive style.
Two years ago, she basked in the sweet image she had been propped up for; however, the novelty of that persona has been replaced by a darker, denser, and more mature aura. Her second GMA Records release “Love Is All I Need” is a 13-track sonic journey, taking listeners from genre to genre as if music is her own little playground.
First single “Kisapmata” is a self-confident departure from the bubblegum pop world she has been successfully thriving on. Experiencing strong airplay, this is a sign of her new musical objective; one that is still grounded on consistent pop formulas with a knack for genre wanderlust.
This time around Yasmien returns with title track “Love Is All I Need”, which incidentally she herself wrote. And although the lyrics are pure and simple, considering this is her first try at songwriting, one is easily reminded of a young Michelle Branch sans the guitar. “Take me to a place I’ve never been/Sail me a ship I haven’t sailed/ Bring me happiness this world can bring/Love is all I need,” sings Yasmien in soft sentimentality.
Taking into account that she is only a teenager with little or no experience in matters of love, she has created a noteworthy song with words wise beyond her years, probably absorbing the vicarious thrills of falling in love. And to top it all off is the excellent video directed by Milos Curameng.
Set in an old manor with beautiful anitque pieces and lush surroundings, an elegant Yasmien shines brightly despite the video’s solemn atmosphere. Conceptually, there are snippets of old-fashioned fairy tale elements depicting her as a lonely princess morosely drifting around the grounds waiting for her handsome prince to come. Alternating shots, moving in tightly then backs up into miniature screens, reinforce the revitalized, classic image that Yasmien has grown up into.
“Love Is All I Need” is feel-good music with adult contemporary undertones, telling us how that sweet lass will emerge in the years to come.
